Now that Saint Louis has had its first significant snow of the year, preceded by a week of weather in the negative degrees, it seems about time for the next seasonal article- so here’s a guide on how to make the most of a Saint Louis winter. With snow days in mind, making hot cocoa and spending hours watching movies sounds like an ideal way to spend time off school. Whether you choose a classic feel good movie like “Valentine’s Day” or the new rom-com “Anyone But You,” you can’t go wrong. Of course, one of the classic outings of a St. Louis winter has to be Steinberg’s. If you find yourself getting weary of sitting in the warmth of your house watching a tear-jerker, ice skating at Steinberg’s is a great way to go, accompanied by a visit to their concession stand for some delicious hot chocolate.
Another cold-weather activity you’ll definitely want to be bundled up for is heading down to Hidden Valley. There you can ski, snowboard, sled, or just hang out in the Après Ski! Although the Garden Glow in the Botanical Gardens has just recently come to an end, it’s another great winter experience with friends or family, so be sure to keep it in mind for the 2024 holiday season! You can walk through all of the gardens surrounded by amazing light shows and even take a tour through Henry Shaw’s old house. There’s food and drink available, and you can get some great pictures out of the visit. Keeping in the theme of sight seeing, viewing the snow-covered city from the Gateway Arch is another perfect way to spend a weekend (albeit slightly touristy). Finding your way to the top of the monument through the tram ride is always fun.
Finally, taking a sled to Art Hill on a snowy day goes without saying. For most, it’s a reflex to slip a coat on and drive up to Forest Park as soon as a glistening snowflake sticks to the ground. It’s been a tradition in the city for over a century. It started in 1905, when a bad storm blew through right after the 1904 World’s Fair. Some of the fair’s workers slid down the hill on folding chairs, and it became a custom. As we head into February (and hopefully some warmer weather!), we’ve got some exciting things going on. Metro’s very own BSU will be hosting a spirit week to celebrate Black History Month, leading up to our Sweethearts Dance (2/10). Have a great 3rd quarter METRO!
