Ted Drewes Frozen Custard has been selling ice-cold treats to St. Louisans for over 80 years, and is credited as a must-go destination for tourists and residents alike. With only two small locations and a lack of a national presence, you might not expect Ted Drewes to amass such a legendary reputation. Outside of their locations on Grand and Chippewa, St. Louisans can enjoy a frozen custard at a Cardinals baseball game, a Muny or Fox production, the Chase Park Plaza movie theater, the Zoo, or the Arch.
“My family has gone to Ted Drewes every summer since I was a baby!” says Metro senior, Abby Leonard.
"In my personal opinion, Ted Drewes Ice Cream isn't all that they needs to get good or get out of town!" says an Anonymous Metro student.
"Ted Drewes Ice Cream is heat!" says Metro junior, Martin O'Connell.
Clementine’s Creamery ranked second best ice cream among Metro students. Created in 2014, Clementine’s does not have as renowned a reputation, but is loved for its range of creative flavors, and has the most, six, locations. The “Naughty or Nice,” selection, or alcoholic or nonalcoholic, does increase interest; though unique, it is not all that appealing to high schoolers due to the 21+ ice cream line.
Summer Grodeon, a Metro junior, says, “Clementine’s has fun flavors but [the prices] hurt my wallet!” The prices, as well as the popularity of the alcoholic options, raise questions about the effects of the survey’s limitations on a high school population.
Ice’s Plain & Fancy ranked third best ice cream among Metro students. With a unique visual experience, patrons can watch as workers flash-churn their ice cream with liquid nitrogen. Also created in 2014, Ice’s lags behind Ted Drewes and Clementine’s popularity-wise and location-wise, with only one location. Several students mentioned that they had never been to Ice’s.
“I go to Ice’s the most often of all the local STL ice cream stores. I love the smooth texture of their ice cream,” says Amalia Meyer, a Metro junior.
